What do you do if you are a seed addict? You buy more seeds of course!
Here is what I decided to get from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds this year. . .
Seed Picks for 2021:
1) Strawberry Spinach – I decided to try these seeds for the first time. You can use the green leaves like spinach because it is a related. The bonus is that it produces edible red berries which are supposed to have a watermelon berry flavor – how intriguing! This plant will reach 18 inches high and can be spaced 4 to 6 inches apart.
2) Snow Princess Calendula – This past year was the first time that I grew Pacific Beauty Calendula and I loved them! They had bright yellow and orange blooms. These blooms are brown in the middle surrounded by lemon and white.
I decided to try two new beans this year and here are my reasons. . .
3) Black Coat Runner Beans – this one sounds so pretty! This pole bean vines up to 7 feet tall and gets tangerine and cherry red edible flowers which should attract hummingbirds. The pods are smaller like a sugar snap peas and yield 2 to 3 beans per pod. While you can eat them as snap beans, you can also dry them. The bean changes from pink to purple to black when fully dried.
4) Sunset Runner Bean – This one is different but just as pretty as the Black Coat. This pole bean vines up to 6 feet or taller and gets peach and light pink flowers. You can eat them as fresh snap beans or dry them. The dried beans are lavender with black speckles.
Next, I wanted to try these two bok choys:
5) Hedou Tiny Bok Choy – This variety is so cute as each one is a bite size. I think I might try growing them inside in my grow room. They are considered a gourmet veggie for the trendy restaurants. This one grow quickly so I will have to monitor this bok choy.
6) Purple Lady Bok Choy – I’ve been growing Violetta Bok Choy for many years since it is hardier. Purple Lady sounds very similar.
7) Extra Precoce A Grano Violetto Fava Beans – I really enjoy this fava bean. I am going to save some seeds this year as they are hard to find. I usually don’t dry them. If you do, the beans will turn from green to purple when fully dried.  I usually harvest them when the beans are green and either cook them or blanch and freeze them.
Baker Creeks provided a free seed packet to my order which was Early Purple Vienna Kohlrabi. I’ve grown this variety before so I will definitely plant this freebie!
