Red Admiral Butterflies

Well I think all butterflies are pretty.  The Red Admiral Butterfly does not disappoint!  Here is a fun fact – they are people friendly and may land on you! It hasn’t happen to me – at least not yet!

Features:  Red Admirals have black and brown wings with orange-red bands and white spots.  Their wing span is between 2 and 3 inches wide.

Food:  These butterflies like flower nectar and rotting fruit – ugh!

Eggs:  The eggs are light green and can be found on their favorite host plant which is nettle.

Caterpillar:  Young caterpillars hide or take shelter in folded nettle leaves.

Migration:  If you live in a warm climate, Red Admirals will stick around throughout the year.  Here in Pittsburgh, PA, they will go south for the winter.

Beneficial:  Of course, the Red Admiral is beneficial because it is a pollinator.  In my garden, this butterfly likes my zinnias and butterfly bushes.

In case you didn’t check it out, last week we took a look at the Two-Spotted Tree Cricket.
