Black Aphids

Black aphids are tiny insects that like to wreak havoc.  This year I was attempting to save spinach seeds and I noticed that my plant was attacked by black aphids.

Features:   These aphids are black, oval shaped and are only 1/8 inch long.

Damage:  They will suck the sap out of your plants – yuck!

Eggs:  When I took the picture, I thought I was taking a picture of aphid eggs.  When I zoomed in on the photo, I noticed that the little black dots were aphids and the eggs.

Control Measures:   Lady bugs and some birds such as chickadees, titmice and warblers like to chow on aphids.  Since I noticed so many aphids on this spinach plant and I know they multiply like crazy, I decided to pull the plant and submerge it in a bag of water and dish detergent.

The last insects we reviewed was milkweed bugs.
