For “regular” or shell peas, I grow the pole types not the bush types because I am trying to maximize space in my garden by growing vertically as much as I can.
The following varieties will give you 9 peas or less per pod:
Wando Peas – this one is an oldie but goodie.
Laxton’s Progress #9 – this one is resistant to wilt.
Tall Telephone – this variety vines up to 6 feet high.
Lillian’s Caseload
Lincoln
Dakota
These varieties will provide up to 11 peas per pod:
Mr. Big
Pretty Pleasin Pea
If you prefer a spark of color in the garden, then check out the following variety:
King Tut Purple – this one has purple flowers and pods and green peas.
If you want a variety that doesn’t vine and is good for container gardening, then check out the following:
Tom Thumb
Kelvedon
Little Marvel
I picked these varieties from Botanical Interests, High Mowing, Baker Creek, MIgardener and Vermont Bean.
