Northern Mockingbird

This is the first year that a Northern Mockingbird visited our yard.  It was quite eventful.  While I wanted to keep feeding him, he kept go after the other birds that I have been feeding for a long time and wouldn’t let them eat.  He especially did not like the cardinals – how territorial and aggressive!  I noticed he kept eating from the vertical suet cake holder.  After about a week of his shenanigans, I took the suet in for a week and he moved on to a new feeding location.  Problem solved!  Now if I could only deter the Starlings!

Here is some information on the Northern Mockingbird:

Appearance:   The male and female look the same.  They both have silver gray heads and backs and light gray chests and bellies.  Their wings and tails are darker gray with white markings.

Someone’s feathers are getting ruffled!

Feeding Habits:  Northern Mockingbirds enjoy insects and fruit and my suet!

Nesting Habits:  They build nests in the form of a cup in shrubs and trees.

Migration:  Northern Mockingbirds stay year round in Pennsylvania.

I recently wrote about the Baltimore Orioles in case you missed it.
