Mexican Beans

Pinto Beans

I have found three types of beans that I like to use with Mexican dishes from Burpee’s Spanish Collection.  I found the seeds at Home Depot but could not find them on Burpees website.

Last year, I grew Pinto Beans and Red Beans.  This year I added Black Turtle Beans.

Mexican Beans

Before I plant bean seeds directly in the ground, I soak the seeds overnight in water and pat them dry with a paper towel.  All three beans grow as a bush and mature in about 90 days.  These plants should be thinned to about 6 inches apart.  The Pinto bean plant will get up to 20 Inches tall.  The height of the other two plants are not marked on the seed packet.  I gently tie these plants to a pole that is between 2 and 3 feet tall so they have some support.

For all three seeds, it is recommended that you dry them.  As the pods dry, I pull the pods from the plant.  Then I remove the beans from the pod and store the beans in an airtight jar such as a canning jar.   My Mom gives me a hand with this project.

You can use some of the dried seeds to plant next year.     Keep in mind that the longevity of bean seeds is about 3 years for planting.

Please do a search on the blog by typing beans to see the other types of beans that I am growing.
