Mallow Plant Family

Mallow Plant Family

You might see the Mallow Plant Family called the Hibiscus Family or by the formal name Malvaceae.

See below for some helpful information regarding the Mallow Family.

Veggies:  okra

Blooms:  hibiscus, rose of sharon, hollyhock, mallow and cotton

Herbs:  marshmallow

Similarities:  The funnel shaped flowers have 5 separate petals with stamen surrounding the pistil in the middle.  Crush any part of the plant and you will be slimed!  These are warm season plants just like the Morning Glory Plant Family.  These plants are low maintenance so if you give them any plant food, I would go with balanced plant food.

Differences:  While the fruit of okra is edible, the roots of mallows are used to make marshmallows and the bloom of cotton is used to make cotton balls.  I can’t think of any other differences right now!
