Grass Plant Family

Grass Plant Family

While the Cucurbit Plant Family has more veggies members, the Grass Plant Family has a summer favorite. There are some grains, a veggie and some ornamental blooms in the Grass Family or Poaceae Family.   Here are some of the members that you might find in a garden:

Veggies:  Corn

While corn is in the Fruits Category of veggies, it is considered a grain when dried.

Grains:  Barley, millet, oats, rye, rice and wheat

Blooms:  Bamboo, pampas grass and plume grass

Similarities:  For the most part grasses have alternating leaves or blades that narrow and the main stem tends to be hollow.

Differences:  While some are short, other members of the grass family like bamboo grow tall.  Some members such as corn and the grains are used for food .  Other members have a different purpose such as bamboo which is used for building materials and corn which is used for eating and making fuel or ethanol.  Even though some members have softer stems, bamboo is very woody.
