I am going to give you my top ten list but I want to warn you that a majority of the list includes flowering plants. The best way to attract hummingbirds is to have the types of flowers that they like and to supplement them with nectar.
Top Ten List:
1) Rose of Sharon – Before I started trying to entice hummingbirds to my yard, I saw them visiting my neighbors Rose of Sharon bush.
2) Fuchsia – I usually buy one of these plants each spring. This year I am letting it overwinter so I don’t have to buy another one.
If you have a tall trellis, I would recommend the next three type of plants to attract hummingbirds
3) Sweet Peas – There are seeds for different types of sweet peas – some are perennials and some are annuals, some bloom only in the spring and others bloom through the summer. Sweet peas focuses on flower production without pea pods.
4) Vining Pea Plants -Some of the pea plants (English, snap and snow) have white flowers that yield green pea pods and others have pinkish purple flowers that yield purple pea pods.
5) Vining Bean Plants – I grow different types of vining dried bean plants that have different colored flowers such as red, purple, pink, peach and white which provide a double bonus!
6) Flowers in the form of tubes – Hollyhock, nasturtium, lupine, etc. Hummingbirds love tube flowers.
8) Hummingbird Nectar – sugar water and clear/white purchased nectar. Don’t buy the red dyed nectar, it is not good for the hummingbirds. Instead, get a feeder that has red in it.
9) Hummingbird Nesting Materials
10) Hummingbird Artwork or Photos – it is hard to capture a photo of a hummingbird – patience is a virtue!
