General Gardening Seed Saving

Brown Bags and Drying Seeds

I haven’t done an article about repurposing since Earth Day.  I have lots of ideas!  If you have brown lunch bags, use them up.  I prefer the more narrow brown bags that I get when I buy some wine oops my secret is out!

When I dry seeds from veggies and herbs that bolt before producing seeds or flowers on stems, I like to cut the stem and put them in a bag upside down to dry out.  If some of the seeds fall out, the bag will catch them.   Also, I use a container like the one in the photo to keep the brown bags upright.  This container was repurposed from a hot chocolate gift pack from my in-laws squared.  I know you are wondering what the heck that means.  In our family, it means my sister-in-law’s family!

As for veggies that bolt, I am referring to greens like lettuce, arugula, spinach, root veggies like carrots, and bulb veggies like onions.  Some herbs that bolt include parsley, cilantro, dill and chives.

We will talk about some specific seed saving ideas soon.  It seems like forever ago when I share how to save globe amaranth seeds.
