Pollinator Feeders

Water for Small Pollinators

Here is a cool idea about providing water for small pollinators like bees and butterflies.  I found this plate in a shaded area at the demonstration garden at South Park (one of the Allegheny County Parks in PA).  This demonstration garden is part of the Penn State Extension Master Gardener Program.

Steps for Providing Water:

1) Use a pretty plate or shallow bowl.  I am thinking of using something from the china set my Mom and Dad used.  Of course, through the years some of the set got broken.  This will make me think of them every time I see it!  I am not going to use china in the winter because it will crack!  Maybe I will use Corelle plates in the winter because it is advertised at crack resistant!

2) Put some stones or marbles on the plate/bowl to give the small pollinators room to perch and drink.

3) I would suggest putting it in a shady/cooler spot in the hot summer months and under a bush or plant for some protection.

4) Also, change out the water daily so you don’t attract mosquitos.  Use cool water!

5) At least, once a week clean the plate/bowl with soap and water.

Last time we chatted on Wildlife Wednesday, I shared my Peanut Wreath Feeder.
