Sow and Grow Raspberries

One of the categories that I use for my website is how to “sow and grow”.  When we are talking about sowing, this refers to fruit, veggies and herbs grown from seed.  While I plant (not sow) raspberries, you get my drift!

Outdoor Planting Tips:  1)  Be careful where you plant your raspberries as  some varieties love to send off shoots or spread.  2) Decide where you want the raspberry plants to grow in advance.  If not,  you may stunt their growth for at least a year.  3) Dig a hole bigger than the root ball.  4) I planted my raspberry plants in the spring when the plants were available.  4) Make sure you give raspberry plants the right amount of space. 5) Raspberries prefer full sun.

Growing Tips:  6) Raspberries like consistent moisture during berry season and good drainage. 6) Raspberry plants are acid loving plants.  I use Holly-tone from Espoma (4-3-4).  If you don’t remember what the numbers mean, then click on the link.    It needs to be applied in the spring according to the package and then half the amount in the fall.  7)  If you need to keep diseases and bad bugs away, apply Neem Oil at night so you don’t hurt any bees or any other good bugs.  8) While people love berries, so do birds, deer and others!  I use deer netting to deter deer, rabbits, chipmunks, etc. and silver reflective ribbon to deter birds.  9)  Raspberry plants enjoy some mulch to keep the the roots cool and keeps weeds from the base on the plants.  10)  Prune the old canes with no new growth.  Pruning is important so all the plants energy is going to the fruit not a bunch of dead wood.

Its been a long time since I posted about sowing and growing fruit.  The last veggie we talked about was how to sow and grow beets.
