Sow and Grow Carrots

Carrot seeds are so tiny which makes them hard to sow.

Outdoor Sowing Tips:  As for soil temperature, you can start sowing the seeds when the soil reaches 45°F. The preferable soil temperature is between 60°F and 85°F. 2) Before sowing, loosen or fluff up the soil so the roots grow nice and straight.  3) Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep. 4) Most carrots should be thinned to 3 inches apart. For square foot gardening, that means 16 carrots per square foot.

Indoor Sowing Tips:   Since carrots and other root veggies don’t like their roots disturbed, I would NOT start radishes indoors.  However, if you grow a variety that is smaller in length, then I would recommend growing them indoors.  2) You can grow them inside under grow lights.  You just need to make sure your pot is deep enough so the radishes don’t dry out.  A good rule of thumb is to have double the soil depth for however long you expect the carrot to get.  3) and 4) – see above.

Growing Tips:  5) Since the seeds are small, you might need to do some thinning.  Don’t pull the other seedlings out, just cut them at the soil line to stop them from growing.  6) Carrots like consistent moisture.  7) As for plant nutrients, carrots prefer phosphorus and potassium, not nitrogen.  If you need some help, I would suggest used coffee grounds or some bone meal.   8) Once the carrot roots start to grow above ground, hill the dirt over them so the tops don’t turn green. 9) If you put carrots under cover or add leaf mulch, you can get a head start in the spring or extend the season into late fall.
