Snow Mulch

My new and remodeled garden was under the siege of snow yesterday and today.  According to the National Weather Service, we got 9.5 inches.  I think it was closer to one foot.  Thank goodness it wasn’t as bad as the snowmageddon of 2010.  There are some good features of snow!

Our birch tree and shed in the snow!

A few things to consider about snow:

1) Snow is considered a winter mulch that protects the roots of plants and any bulbs like garlic or tulips that you planted.

2) Snow is very beautiful on the trees!

3) I try not to put snow from the driveway on my edible plants and growing areas especially if we use salt or a fake salt on the asphalt or concrete.

4) I am still learning new things about gardening. . . did you know that as snow falls it collects nitrogen?  As the snow melts, it slowly releases nitrogen – no wonder our grass is so pretty until it gets super hot in July.

5) Check our your tender evergreens and younger trees as too much snow might damage them.  If the snow is light and fluffy, gently use a broom to knock off some of the snow.

6) Some animals will hide or burrow in the snow.  I have a cute bunny story to share with you soon!

If you missed my post on leaf mulch/mold, you can see it now.
