Summer squash comes in the form of yellow squash and green zucchini. It grows in a bush form. Here are some seed ideas for you to consider.  I am currently growing Cube of Butter (yellow squash) and Black Beauty Zucchini which is green not black from Botanical Interests. I love these two which mature between 50 and 55 days.   They are both bush plants and very productive. Territorial Seeds also sells Cube of Butter and Black Beauty.
Now there are plenty of other options. For instance, yellow summer squash is either straightneck or crookneck. If you take a look at High Mowing Seeds, you will see what I mean.  All three seed companies have plenty of green zucchini options – light green, dark green, striped green – who knew that there would be so many options! Another variety that I am starting now is called Cocozelle which I got from Botanical Interests. It is a striped green zucchini. It is Italian and is known for its baby sized zucchini and flowers. I did not have good luck with this one last year but I am trying again.
Now there are lots of specialty summer squash with different shapes. For instance, I am trying the Patty Pan Blend from Botanical Interests. They look like flying saucers with scalloped edges – how cute! This blend includes three varieties and colors called Early White Bush, Golden Scallop and Bennings Green Tint. While you can’t buy these seeds separately from Botanical Interests, you can find some individual colors from High Mowing Seeds and Territorial Seeds.
You can also check out the One Ball Squash from Territorial Seeds which grows in the size of pool balls and is yellow. Piccolo Squash is striped and looks like a mini watermelon but tastes like squash.
Keep in mind that the different seed companies may advertize all the summer and winter squash under one title of squash or they may separate them on their website.
