San Marzano Tomatoes

While I recently wrote about Super Marzano Tomatoes, I am still growing good old San Marzano Tomatoes.  You can tell the difference – Super Marzano are a little larger and have a pointed end. If you don’t believe me, the just click on the link.  So here are my thoughts on the best features of the San Marzano Tomatoes. . .

Best Features:

1) The fruit will get up to 4 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide.

2) San Marzano usually vines up to 6 ft. or more so be prepared with your trellis.

3) This tomato is good for eating right off the vine, grilling and for making sauce, paste and salsa.

4) San Marzano is a meatier tomato which means there are less seeds and juice which is why it is good for sauces and salsa!

5) I usually see clusters of three San Marzano Tomatoes as in the photo below.

6) It is rumored to be the parent of most paste or roma tomatoes!

7) It is open pollinated so you can save your own seeds.

I originally purchased the San Marzano Tomato seeds from Botanical Interests.
