Reblooming Lilac

Bloomerang 2

While I planted the Bloomerang Purple Reblooming Lilac a few years ago, this is the first year it really looked good.  I think it helped since I cut back the Russian Sage bushes (see the blog titled “Russian Sage – Don’t Eat It”) that are right beside it so the lilac had more room to grow.  Also, I am sure all of the Pittsburgh rain helped!

The reblooming lilac is a good pick for zones 3 to 7.  It likes full sun and soil that is on the alkaline side.   It will grow between 4 and 5 feet high and 4 feet wide.   This plant blooms in the Spring and then again from mid/late summer to frost but loses its green leaves in the winter.   You should remove the spent flowers and prune it after the Spring bloom.  This will encourage more blooms and growth.

An extra bonus is that the hummingbirds like the blooms and the deer do not. . .
