If you want to make an impact in your containers or in your landscaping in the fall, then consider growing ornamental kale and cabbage. While I like to grow a lot of edible veggies from seed, I like to buy my ornamental plants like flowers and ornamental kale. If I had a little more room, I would consider growing these beauties from seed.

At a trendy florist shop in Denver, I saw some beautiful bouquets made from ornamental kale and cabbage.  Check out the photo to the right.

Ornamental kale sure makes a statement in the fall when other flowers are dying. Also, the cool weather in fall will make the plant colors more vibrant.

Keep in mind that ornamental kale and cabbage is actually edible but not as tender as their “edible” cousins. Don’t forget to give them a bit of water periodically whenever the weather warms up. If you plant them early in the season before there is any frost, you will still have to keep an eye out for the dreaded cabbage moth and cabbage worms.
