Northern Mockingbirds

While I first saw a Northern Mockingbird in our yard in 2020, it was quite eventful.  While I wanted to keep feeding this mockingbird, he kept go after the other birds that I had been feeding for a long time and wouldn’t let them eat.  He especially did not like the cardinals – how territorial and aggressive!  I noticed he kept eating from the vertical suet cake holder.  After about a week of his shenanigans, I took the suet in for a week and he moved on to a new feeding location.  Problem solved!  Now if I could only deter the Starlings!

Here is some information on the Northern Mockingbird:

Appearance:   The male and female look the same.  They both have silver gray heads and backs and light gray chests and bellies.  Their wings and tails are darker gray with white markings.

Someone’s feathers are getting ruffled!

Feeding Habits:  Northern Mockingbirds enjoy insects and fruit and suet!

Nesting Habits:  They build nests in the form of a cup in shrubs and trees.

Eggs: Up to 5 blue green eggs with brown markings per brood.

Migration:  Northern Mockingbirds stay year round in Pennsylvania.

I recently wrote about dogs in the garden in case you missed it.
