Cardinals are our favorite birds in the backyard.
Mates for Life: Northern cardinals don’t look for a new mate unless one of them dies. We have 3 couples that hang out at our backyard feeders.
Appearance: While male cardinals are a brilliant red, females are a light brown with red accents in the wings, tails and crests. Both have a black masks around their red beaks.
Feeding Habits: While you can plant sunflowers, safflowers and berry bushes to attract these cardinals, you can also put black oil sunflower seeds, shelled sunflower chips, safflower seeds, fruit and berries in a bird feeder. Cardinals also like insects and spiders.
Nesting Habits: Cardinals like to nest in bushes and small trees. Their cup nests consist of twigs, vines, grass and hair.
Eggs: Northern cardinals will lay up to 5 eggs once or twice a year.
Migration: Northern cardinals like to stay put and do not migrate, so we feed them all year.
I shared some info. on the Northern Flicker Woodpecker last time.
