Kale Varieties

Nero Toscana Lacinato Kale

So the common name for Nero Toscana Lacinato Kale is dinosaur kale.

Features:

1) This kale variety has dark green leaves that will grow to 3 inches wide.  The tender young leaves are lavender on the bottom and pale green on top as in the photo.

2) Also the leaves are savoyed or crinkled.

3) The seeds need to be sowed 1/4 inch below the soil surface.

4) Nero Toscana will grow between 2 and 4 feet tall and up to 14 inches wides.

5) This variety loves to grow in the spring and fall.

6) In milder climates, Nero Toscana will grow as a biennial.  Here in Pittsburgh Nero Toscana is an annual.

7) For salad greens, this variety is usually harvested small.  As the leave get larger, they are prime candidates for sauteeing, soups and stews.

I also like Red Russian Kale.
