Insects

Milkweed Bugs

This is the first year that I really noticed the Milkweed Bug.  I found these bugs hanging out on the mosquito netting on one of the vegetable beds.

Features:  Milkweed bugs have a black wings with a red/orange x shape.  Also, they have black antennas and reach up to 3/4 inch.

Damage:  Unless you get a large infestation of milkweed bugs, they will not cause too many issues.  They will focus their energy on the milkweed seeds to keep milkweed plants from spreading.

Eggs: The eggs are bright orange.

Control Measures:   For the most part, milkweed bugs are not a problem.  If they become an issue, then I would suggest hand picking them and placing them in a plastic bag or container filled with water or dish detergent.  Don’t use pesticides because you don’t want to harm the monarch butterflies and other beneficial insects.

Wow it has been a long time since we discussed other insects!  The last insect was bean leaf beetles.

If I have just a few bean leaf beetles, I will try to catch and kill them by placing them in a plastic bag or container filled with water and dish detergent.
