Honeybees

While we don’t have a beehive and we are not yet beekeepers (maybe someday), we do attract some honeybees in the summer with all of the flower and vegetable blooms.

Features:   Honeybees are about 1/2 inch long, are oval shaped, have antennas and stingers.  They are golden yellow with brownish black stripes or bands.  If you dare to get close enough, you will see that they have 6 little legs.

Food :   They love nectar and pollen that’s why honeybees are pollinators!

Migration:  Honeybees stay put in their hives during the winter and keep busy by clustering around the queen bee to stay warm.

Beneficial:  Not only are honeybees beneficial because they are pollinators but they also make honey and beeswax.

Predators:   While the Varroa mite is tiny, it can cause Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) and destroy colonies of bees.  Humans harm honeybees by destroying their natural habitat and using pesticides on plants – Go Organic and Save the Bees!

Last time I posted about another pollinator – the Red Admiral Butterfly.
