Peony Varieties

Herbaceous Peonies

I took this photo of my neighbor’s peony plant.   I usually just call them peonies, but technically they are Herbaceous Peonies.  I am making the distinction because there are two other varieties of peonies.

Features:

1) The peony blooms that I see in Pittsburgh are typically pink, light pink and white.  They also come in red.

2) Since the blooms can reach 10 inches wide, they really need some support so they don’t flop over!

3) Herbaceous peonies can grow up to 3 feet tall and wide.

4) When there are done blooming, the pretty green leaves will last through the fall.

5) They like full sun and good drainage.

6) Typically peonies bloom in late spring.

7) While peonies are considered deer and rabbit resistant, ants really love them!

8) Herbaceous peonies grow from tubers.

The last bloom topic was Stella d’Oro Daylily.
