Follow-Up Friday – Tomatoes and Peppers

The first update today is on the pole tomatoes.  The three plants on the left (see above) are Pineapple Tomatoes and the plant on the right is a Super Snow White Cherry Tomato plant.  I am using the longest poles that I could find to provide support for these tomatoes and they look healthy.

If you recall from the blog titled “Tiny Tomatoes” I purchased a cherry tomato seed packet from Botanical Interests that has a blend of seven different tomato seed that are color coded.  I started all seven indoors and transplanted them around Memorial Day weekend and only the Super Snow White survived.  So I decided to try another experiment – I planted the seeds for the other six directly in the ground.    See the picture below.    When they get a little bigger and I harvest other vegetables so there is more room, I will transplant the cherry tomatoes.   Hopefully there is a long enough growing season.  I will let you know how it goes.

While all of the pepper plants are doing well, the Poblano and the Anaheim Green Chili Peppers (see below) look the best.  They are starting to get blooms which means the peppers will be arriving soon!

One thing I learned this year is that when I started the pepper and tomato plants indoors in February and March, they did well because the heat temperature was good down in the basement and the grow lights gave enough light.  However, when it got warmer outside and the air conditioner came on, the basement got too cool for the starter plants.

Next year, I am going to move the starter tomato and pepper plants in the Spring to my spare bedroom  in the front of the house which is usually the warmest room and has a lot of natural sunlight coming in.  Also, I am going to move the tomato plants from the peat pots to larger pots so they get a stronger root system.

Rumor has it that my husband, Alan might be building me a small greenhouse!  Stay tuned!
