The fall herb garden is still going strong. Here’s what is still growing . . .
I have a few flowers and three types of vegetables growing in the herb garden. There are yellow calendula flowers at either end. The snapdragons that are up front go through cycles of pink and yellow blooms. Right now, we are in the off cycle! The three plants with serrated leaves are artichoke plants. While the plants grew well this summer, I didn’t get any artichokes. I think I didn’t expose the seedlings to enough cool temperature to let them think that they are perennials. To learn more about this, just click on the link to see how to sow and grow artichokes. I put ornamental grass around the pole holding the bird feeders. Also, I have two types of perennial greens (chicory and French sorrel) growing in the herb garden. They are a bit overshadowed by the purple sage.
As you can see some of my perennial herbs took over the herb garden like the purple sage, oregano, thyme and chives. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve cut back the sage! This year, I started growing garlic chives in addition to the common chives.
The annual herbs that are still growing include rosemary, mushroom herb, olive herb, borage and three types of basil. Last year, the borage got so big that I had to keep trimming it and this year it is much smaller. I bet you can’t even see it. I can confirm that it is there!
I plan on pulling the artichoke plants since they did not bear any fruit, Also, I took some basil cutting and am rooting it for my hydroponic indoor garden. I plan on potting my rosemary, mushroom herb and olive herb and a chive runner to grow inside.
Always something to do in the fall garden.
