Northern Cardinals and some of the smaller birds love this dome feeder which has a clear movable dome and a clear feeding tray. The dome will keep the bird food dry. Also, it is good for picture taking too!
When you use a feeding tray, you need to understand that it will attract a lot of birds. You can keep the dome lower to keep out the bigger birds and change up the type of bird food you provide to deter the birds you don’t want to attract. For instance, you can lower the dome so you don’t attract morning doves which love feeding trays. You just need to leave enough space for the cardinals and smaller birds. Since starlings love to eat from the dome feeder, I like to put in bird seed that they don’t like such as safflower seeds. The good thing about using a feeding tray with safflower seeds, the birds tend to keep the outer shell in the tray after they eat the good stuff in the middle. This means less mess in the garden.
Since this feeder is light weight, you should bring it in when it is really windy.
