While borage flowers come in blue or white, I typically grow the blue ones. Borage is an herb that you probable won’t find at the supermarket so why not grow it!
Features:
- Bees and other beneficial insects are attracted to Borage which is so important for gardeners!
- While the stems and mature leaves will get prickly, the young fresh leaves and flowers are edible. They taste like cucumbers!
- As the leaves and stems get bigger, they get hairy/prickly. At this stage, you can steam or sauté them like you would spinach or chard.
- While the blooms are small, they sure are a pretty blue. Since my cell phone cover is the same color as the borage flower. a bee came straight for my phone while I was sitting next to my herb garden!

- The deer prefer to ignore borage which is a good thing in Pennsylvania.
- Borage will reach up to 3 feet tall and 1 1/2 feet wide. Once my plant reached 3 feet tall, I had to put a hoop around it to keep it growing upright.
- This herb likes full sun to part shade.
- If you don’t trim the spent flowers, you will get a lot more borage as it self seeds. My borage comes back every year!
