Bean Leaf Beetles

Over the years, I noticed nibbles on the bean leaves and pods but never saw the bean leaf beetle until this year.

Features:  Bean leaf beetles are only 1/4 inch long and are typically greenish yellow with a black triangle behind their head.   Also, many have wings outlined in black and have four black spots on their wings like the one I found in my garden.

Damage:  Unless you get a large infestation of bean leaf beetles, most of the damage will be cosmetic as they will chew on leaves and bean pods.  However they can attack and kill young bean plants and spread diseases.

Eggs: The females lay orange eggs on the soil in clusters typically around the base of bean plants.

Control Measures:   Try planting in a different locations and in June after the overwintering adults have moved on.  Use a floating row cover until the plants start blooming.  If I have just a few bean leaf beetles, I will try to catch and kill them by placing them in a plastic bag or container filled with water and dish detergent.  They are hard to catch like the cucumber beetle!

The last time I talked about Garden Wildlife it was a about the bumblebee.  Pollinators are way better for the garden that bad insects!
