American Bald Eagle

An American Bald Eagle perched in a tree.

One of our newer followers on Facebook, sent me this photo of the American Bald Eagle.  Since I have not been lucky enough to see this beautiful bird up close in the wild, I thought I would share it.  The picture was taken near Canonsburg Lake.

Appearance:  First of all, they are not bald.  The name is an old reference to their white heads.  While their feathers are mostly brown, they also have white tails and heads.  Bald Eagles have large yellow hooked beaks.   While the females and males look similar, the females are up to 25% larger than the males.

Feeding Habits:  Bald Eagles prefer to live near large bodies of water because they love fish!

Nesting Habits:  Bald Eagles usually select large older trees near the water to build their nests.  Because of their size, Bald Eagles have the largest nests out of the bird family.

Migration:   While Bald Eagles will live anywhere from Canada down to Northern Mexico, Bald Eagles will migrate south in the fall and winter from Canada and the Northern U.S.

While the last bird that I shared with you from my backyard was the Blue Jay, I still have more birds to share with you.
