Types of Carrots

Typically when you go to the grocery store, you only see imperator carrots but there are four other types available to grow.

Imperator:   This type is tapered and grows up to 10 inches long. Some examples are Tendersweet and Cosmic Red.

Danvers:  This type is resistant to cracking and grows in a cone shape that reaches up to 8 inches long.  This type is tolerant of poor soil.  An example is Danvers 126.

Chantenay:  This type is a bit chunkier and has a 2 inch wide top that tapers down to a point like an ice cream cone.  While this type will reach 6 inches long, it is great to grow in shallow or heavy soil.  An example is Shin Kuroda.

Nantes:  This type grows like a cylinder and is rounded at the top and bottom and will reach about 7 inches long.  This type grows faster than the others but does not store as long.  An example is Scarlet Nantes.

Minis:  This type will grow up to 4 inches long and is a great candidate for growing indoors under grow lights or in containers outside.  This type also does not store as long.  Examples include Little Finger & Parisian.

I previously shared my thoughts about the types of beets which is another root vegetable.
