What a name – Tromba D’Albenga Zucchetta!  It is a squash that can be grown to be a summer squash like zucchini or a winter squash.  If you want a summer squash, then you should pick it when it is about 10 inches long or under.  As it gets longer, the skin will harden and turn a toffee or beige color. I usually pick them a little larger than summer squash.
Love the shape of this zucchetta. It has a long rounding stem and a bulb at the end. All of the seeds are concentrated in the bulb.
Unlike summer squash which grows in a bush form, zucchetta vines like pumpkins, winter squash and cucumbers. It can grow over 15 feet long – yikes! You will like the results better if you grow it up a trellis – at least I do. This year I didn’t use a trellis so this plant is growing where I like to walk between my raised beds.
Inquiring minds want to know why I am growing this variety. . . I noticed on the Seeds from Italy website that if your plants are plagued by cucumber beetles or squash bugs, you should try this variety because it is more resistant to these bad bugs. While you may get some bad bugs, it won’t kill the plant – I can attest to this!
