Growing pansies and their cute cousins, violas are easy under the right conditions. Pansies and violas prefer cooler weather and definitely do not like the afternoon sun. Pansies and violas also like water and some organic plant food.
I like to plant them in the spring in the hanging baskets in the front of our house. Toward the end of May, this spot gets way too hot with the afternoon sun. This year I moved them to the side of my herb garden that is close to the house which provides some nice shade in the afternoon.
If you are sowing pansies and violas from seed, it is suggested that you sow the seeds indoors about 2 1/2 months before the last frost in the spring or direct sow them outdoors 1 1/2 months before the last frost for spring flowers. If you are seeking fall flowers, then sow the seeds mid to late summer. If you missed my seed ideas for pansies or violas, just click on the links.
