I am going to focus on saving seeds so I save some money! That doesn’t mean I will never buy any new seeds because I like to try new varieties. Last year, I focused on growing some flowers from seed. Since I was successful, I decided to add a few more flowers to the list. Here are my new picks from Botanical Interests:
Seed Picks for 2021:
As for flowers, I picked the following:
1) Common Milkweed – Since milkweed is a host plant for Monarch butterflies, I decided to grow the shorter variety which will reach up to 3 feet tall It is a perennial and has pink blooms.
2) Paradiso Dwarf Echinacea (Coneflower) Blend – While I’ve been growing a shorter coneflower variety called Pow Wow with pink blooms, I wanted some other colors. This blend includes the following colors: white, rose/purple, yellow and orange/red. I’ve noticed that finches love coneflowers. These flowers are perennials that will reach up to 2 feet tall.
3) Jewel Nasturtium Blend – While nasturtiums are edible annuals, they bloom from spring to fall. Some varieties of Nasturtium vine. This variety is more compact and will reach up to 12 inches tall. This one likes full sun to part shade.
As for veggies and herbs, my selection includes:
4) Cherry Falls Tomatoes – This variety of cherry tomatoes will cascade over the edge of containers and hanging baskets. I am thinking of growing at least one plant so I can bring it indoors in the fall. Stay tuned!
5) Summer Savory – This is an annual herb that is good for salads and cooking. It has delicate leaves plus flowers.
6) Winter Savory – This herb is a perennial. The flavor is supposed to be spicy and peppery with a little thyme and mint flavor – sounds interesting to me!
Just the other day I shared my seed picks from MI Gardener.
