While we previously discussed kale seed ideas, today’s topic is spinach.
Since I am a self professed seed addict, I am growing the following four varieties this year.
Bloomsdale – this one has large wrinkled leaves.
Palco – tolerates some warm weather
Lavewa
Monstrueux de Viroflay – this one is a French heirloom – oh la la!
There are quite a few more varieties available including:
Butterflay
Galilee – very heat tolerant
Giant Nobel
Matador – this variety loves to grow in the fall.
Verdil – very cold hardy
There are some varieties that are not technically spinach but they are close alternatives:
New Zealand – this variety is a perennial in zone 8 and warmer. Also, you can harvest this one all summer long.
Perpetual
Red Malabar – this one loves the heat and needs a trellis to grow on.
Strawberry – this variety also produces a berry and the plant is frost hardy.
You can find these seeds at Baker Creek, Botanical Interests, High Mowing Seeds and/or MIGardener.
