Pole Tomatoes

Well if you want to go vertical with your garden to save some horizontal space, then pole tomatoes are the way to go.   We already talked about the pole cherry tomatoes that I am growing again this year.  Now we should talk about some pole tomatoes with mid size to large fruit.  Don’t forget that you will often see pole tomato plants identified as indeterminate plants.

The following are some pole tomatoes that are red:

  • Botanical sells Beefsteak, Brandywine, Money Maker and Red Siberian. I am trying Money Maker this year.
  • Burpee offers some cocktail hybrid tomatoes such as Fourth of July, Mountain Magic and Cloudy Days. The cocktail name means that it ranges between 2 and 5 oz.  As for larger ones, some of the choices include Jersey Boy, Mortgage Lifter, Steakhouse, Big Boy, Summer Girl plus more!   If you want seedless, check out Sweet Seedless.
  • High Mowing has some nice choices. Here are a few:  beefsteaks – German Johnson and Brandywine, midsize – Roni and Rose de Berne and saladettes – Glacier.
  • Johnny’s Selected Seeds offers 7 choices including New Girl, Mountain Magic, Big Beef.
  • Territorial sells Stupice, Momotaro and more.

In addition to red, there are some great color options for tomatoes:

  • Botanical Interest offers some striped ones called Pineapple and Green Zebra. Check out Indigo – it is purple on the outside and red on the inside.  I am still growing my Pineapple seeds from a few years ago and I added Indigo this year.
  • Burpee sells a smaller one called Red Lightning which is red with yellow streaks. As for the larger ones, it offers Chef’s Choice Orange, Orange Slice, Stripey (yellow and pink stripes), Sunny Boy (yellow), Cherokee Purple, Black Crim and Hungarian Heart which has pink fruit that weighs in at 1 lb.
  • High Mowing sells Cherokee Purple, Yellow Brandywine, Copia (orange, red and green striping), Green Zebra, Black Trifele, Yellow Perfection, Tang, Pink Boar and Indigo Rose.
  • Johnny’s offers Clementine, Pink Berkeley Tie Dye, Chef’s Choice Orange and Martha Washington (pink).  They also offer some interesting heirloom and artisan tomatoes – check it out!
  • Territorial get the prize for the most unique color option with Ananas Noire which has green, purple, orange and yellow streaks on the skin and the flesh is bright green with red streaks. The also offer Pink Berkeley and some indigo tomatoes.

If you want one with fuzzy skin, then check out Wapsipinicon Peach from High Mowing.

For two color choices in one seed packet, check out Brandywine Red & Yellow from Botanical Interests.

If you are canning and want a pole paste tomato, check out the following:

  • Botanical Interests sells San Marzona and Speckled Roman which is red with yellow stripes.
  • Burpee offers Amish Paste, San Marzano, SuperSauce, Little & Big Mama and Fresh Salsa.
  • High Mowing sells Granadero, Amish Paste, San Marzano and Gibertie which grows to 7” long.
  • Johnny’s offers Juliet, Golden Rave, Verona and Grandero. Golden Rave is the only past tomato that is not red that I have found so far.
  • Territorial offers San Marzano, Gigante 3 and Pozzano.
