If you live in a warmer climate, you can grow artichokes as perennials. In Pittsburgh, PA, artichokes are grown as annuals.
If you have to grow annual artichokes, then look for a maturity date under 90 days. Since I like to get the biggest bang for my buck, I look at the number of buds and their size. As color may be important, you have the choice of green or purple buds.
Seed Ideas:
My favorite seed company for artichoke seeds is High Mowing.
Tavor Artichoke – green buds with purple tips that are 4 1/2 inches in diameter.
Wonder F1 Artichoke – this green hybrid has 5 inch heads.
You can find some cool artichoke seeds from Seeds from Italy on Grow Italian.
Imperial Star – this is a green variety.
Violetta – this is the purple variety.
The next variety is sole by most seed companies:
Green Globe – it takes over 150 days to mature.
While I am just starting to update my vegetable seed ideas, I’ve been sharing some herb seed ideas like parsley.
