I originally bought a seed packet of Globe Amaranth seeds from Butchart Gardens when I was on vacation. The seed packet included pink, white and purple flowers.
Most seeds will last for about 3 years if kept in a cool location. Of course, I wanted to try and save the seeds by the color of the flower as they were all mixed in the seed packet.
Seed Saving Tips:
1) Leave the Globe Amaranth flower head to dry on the plant.
2) Once the flower head is completely dry, you are ready to save the seeds. Cut the flower head from the stem.
3) Once you break apart the flower head, you will feel the seeds at the base of the bracts in the fuzzy coating. While some gardeners keep the seeds in the fuzzy coating, some (like me) remove the light tan seed from the fuzzy coating. I think for longer term storage you should remove the coating.
4) Leave the Globe Amaranth seeds out to dry for a week.
5) Store the seeds in a brown bag or envelope until next season. Don’t forget to label the variety, color and year that you saved them.
