When we were taking apart the garden to do the garden makeover, my son found this little Land Snail
under a piece of wood.
Features: They have shells and one or two pair of tentacles. The ones I have seen only have one pair! Land snails use muscus to crawl over rough surfaces and to keep their bodies from drying out. Some land snails will hibernate over the winter in the shell by sealing it with some dried mucus – interesting but all this talk about mucus is gross!
Damage: If you see snails in your garden, you will want to keep an eye on the young members of the cabbage family. Land snails love the stems and leaves.
Eggs: Land snails lay eggs in the soil. Beware they could lay up to 400 eggs a year – yikes!
Control Measures:  When we have cool and rainy weather, I will see some snails. I like to use Sluggo Plus to control them. It is a great product for organic gardening.
I don’t want to judge others but some people eat snails! I can’t even touch them.
I made up a new category of pests to capture things like slugs and snails. The last garden insect that we took a look at was the Bean Leaf Beetle
