While there are a few varieties of borage, I am growing Common Borage. Borage is an herb that you probable won’t find at the supermarket.
Best Features:
1) While the stems and mature leaves will get prickly, the young leaves and flowers are edible. They taste like cucumbers!
2) The bees and other beneficial insects are attracted to Borage which is so important for gardeners!
3) While the blooms are small, they sure are a pretty blue. This year I got a new cover for my cell phone which is the same color as the borage flower. I was sitting outside near the borage plant and a bee came straight for my phone!
4) The deer prefer to ignore it which is a good thing in Pennsylvania.
5) Common Borage will reach up to 3 feet tall and 1 1/2 feet wide. Once my plant reached 3 feet tall, I had to put a hoop around it to keep it growing upright.
6) This herb likes full sun to part shade.
Keep in mind that you need to remove the dead flowers in order to keep getting flowers. This feature is a little high maintenance for me, but I think this herb is a keeper because of the taste and the pollinators.
