I have been growing Blue Lake Green Beans for quite a few years.  The main reason is because this variety is the type used by the canned green bean companies like Del Monte. Canned green beans with salt are a must in our family. We are trying to freeze them this year as this variety is a good choice for canning and freezing – I am saving this for a future post. Of course, you can always eat them fresh by steaming or boiling them.
Blue Lake Green Beans have green (not blue) pods, white seeds, and white and pale yellow flowers. While I am growing the pole variety called Blue Lake Green Bean FM-1K from Botanical Interests which can reach up to 8 feet tall, there is a bush variety as well.  These beans can be picked up to 7″ long and when they are pencil thin. They mature in approximately 66 days and are stringless.  Blue Lake Green Beans like a little space so the seeds should be planted 1″ down and every 6″.
