Bloom Successes and Failures 2020

Sometimes you have to admit the failures along with your successes when gardening!  Since I like to focus on the positives or successes, I don’t spend too much time on the failures.  Well here we go with the new me. . .

Successes:

I was successful in getting more sweet potato vines to add to my planters by cutting and rooting  them.

In an attempt to save money with annual flowers, I was successful in growing the following from seed:

1) Globe Amaranths

2) Pacific Beauty Calendulas

3) Signet Marigolds

4) Perennial Sweet Peas

5) Confetti California Poppies – these poppies are also on my failure list. . .

Failures:

One of my most disappointing failures was that I didn’t believe that the Confetti California Poppy roots were so sensitive to being moved.  First, I grew them inside and then transplanted them to the vegetable garden to attract pollinators.   When they started taking up too much space around my hot peppers, I decided to move them.  Since they were already almost full grown, they hated being moved.  Next year I will have to transplant the seedlings to their forever home – lesson learned!

This next failure is not totally my fault. . . I planned on buying Profusion Zinnia seeds in the winter but they ended up selling out early in the season which I blame on the increased interest in gardening due to Covid-19.   Not sure if “blame” is the right word! Profusion Zinnias are my go to annual – I love the colors and the blooms!   Eventually, I found some seedlings so this year I am focusing on saving some zinnia and other seeds.  You never know what is in store for next year’s growing season.

As for perennial failures, I lost one of three Pow Wow Coneflowers this year – not sure why???  This is the only perennial that hit the bucket!

If I think of any other successes or failures, I will update this post in the future!
