While I have to admit that I never bought seeds from Baker Creek, I plan on it this year.  I’d like to share my thoughts on this seed catalog as it is the first 2017 one that came in the mail:
1) It has glossy pages with beautiful pictures of the vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers.
2) There are rare seeds from 100 countries and tribes.
3) There are lots of options for unusual varieties with different colors and sizes.
If you want some extra bean options, they have a pole plant that produces jade colored dried beans from Uganda called Fort Portal Jade.  While I like green and purple podded beans, they have a red podded one called Red Swan Bush. Baker Creek has five options for each of the following: fava beans, lima beans and long noodle beans.
As for cabbage, they have a red (Kalibos) and a green (Early Jersey) variety that grows upright in a conical head. If you want a small, gourmet carrot, check out Little Finger which is orange and Lobbericher Yellow.
Now if you want to grow varieties of colorful corn such as blue, pink and gem colors for popcorn or for decoration, Baker Creek is the right place to look.
They have some very unusual cucumbers and gourds from around the world. Check out the Sikkim cucumber from the Himalayas and the Serpente Di Sicilia gourd from Italy. As for squash, Baker Creek has Gelber Englischer Custard Summer Squash from Germany and Kogigu winter squash from Japan. There are plenty more seeds from various countries so you will have to do your own research.
Now I will have to end with the most unusual tomato I have ever seen. It is call Reisetomate which looks like a bunch of cherry tomatoes fused together. You can then tear off a piece at a time – interesting!
Stay tuned for fruits, herbs and flowers from Bakers Creek. . .
