Poinsettias are Too Pretty to Discard

During the Christmas holiday season, many people buy poinsettias.  When you take down your decorations, do you throw away the poinsettias?  Resist and try growing them inside.   If you can maintain the plants inside until summer, you can try growing them outside too.  Don’t forget that poinsettias are from Mexico so they like heat.

To keep them going inside, they need 6 hours of sunlight a day.  Make sure they don’t touch the cold windows.  They like temperatures close to 70 degrees.   Don’t get the plants water logged because they don’t like it!

Don’t worry if the blooms fade in the Spring because new blooms will be showing up for summer.  If you can keep the plants growing, you can move them outside for more enjoyment in the summer.    Give them some plant food when they start blooming.

Now I have two large plants.  I think it is easier to maintain them if they are smaller.  Every Christmas I go to the store intending to buy several small poinsettias but I can’t resist the big ones!  I bought the red & white poinsettia above and my niece Lisa and her family  brought the red one.  Now my living room has the most room for extra plants but it is lacking in sunlight.  I may have to move them around the house to keep them until summer.  I will let you know.  Send me an email with your poinsettia pictures at sandyatcrazyforgardening.com.

The picture below has Lisa and her family and my family in it.  You can see a little bit of the poinsettias in this picture on the left side!
