While I have never grown orchids inside my home, I still love to look at them! We went to Phipps Conservatory (phipps.conservatory.org) in Pittsburgh, PA a few weekends ago. One of my favorite rooms there is the orchid room.  Just take a look at the lovely orchids pictured here.
 
The number one rule for growing orchids is not to put them in potting soil. Instead grow orchids in a pot filled with bark chips or stones. Just water them once a week and let them dry before watering again. I think orchids would make a lovely living gift for the special person in your life!
