Extra Precoce A Grano Violetto Fava Bean

Grano Violetto Fava Beans

This is quite a name for a fava bean variety – Extra Precoce A Grano Violetto.  If you let the seed dry out, it will turn purple or violetto.   If you pick it before it dries out, it will be green like Broad Windsor Fava Bean.  In case you are wondering, I found these seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds.

Here is why the Extra Precoce A Grano Violetto is now my favorite. . . It matures earlier between 8 and 10 weeks.  It is very productive with pod production considering it only reaches between 2 1/2 and 3 feet tall.  Each pod contains about 6 beans.

Productive and Bushy Plants

I would suggest giving the plant a little growing room and space them around 8 to 12  inches.  Also, the seeds should be planted 1 to 2 inches deep.
