American Purple Top Rutabaga

American Purple Top Rutabaga

The American Purple Top Rutabaga is a root vegetable that prefers to be harvested in cool weather.  It will germinate within 2 weeks and mature in under 120 days.  It is suggested that you sow this variety up to a 1 1/2 months before your average last frost date or up to 4 months before your first fall frost date.  This year, I sowed the rutabaga seeds 1 1/2 months before my average last frost date.  So far, I harvested three of them.  I plan to let the rest grow a little more and harvest in the fall.

This root vegetable will grow part above and below the ground.  The green leaves will grow up to 20 inches tall and wide.  The bottom part of this variety is a pale yellow and the top is purple.

It is suggested that you space this plant 6 inches apart.  The American Purple Top Rutabaga should be harvested when it is between 4 and 6 inches wide.  If you need other tips on how to Sow and Grow Rutabaga, just click on the ling.

I bought these seeds from Botanical Interests and would have to agree with their taste assessment  – they have a sweet and mellow flavor.
